The 3 Stooges Do Europe

Larry, Moe, & Curly
in high spirits at a cafe along the Russian Borstch Belt.

French President Jacques Chirac delivered a series of insults to Britain while chatting to the German and Russian heads of state in a Russian cafe. He said: “The only thing [the British] have ever given European farming is mad cow.” Then, he poked fun at English cuisine, saying “You can’t trust people who cook as badly as that. After Finland, it’s the country with the worst food.” At that hilarity, Russian President Vladimir Putin chimed in to belittle American cooking: “But what about hamburgers?” Chirac quickly countered, “Oh no, hamburgers are nothing in comparison.” The francophone continued reciting a story that George Robertson, a member of Tony Blair’s cabinet, had forced him to eat the Scottish dish haggis. “That’s where our problems with NATO come from,” Chirac said, and “Larry” Schroder and “Curly” Putin continued chuckling. Indeed, Jacques Chirac was quite the comic, but unfortunately for the three stooges, they did not know that their verbal antics were being recorded by a journalist, probably the intent woman appearing in the image background.

Lorraine Millot, the French journalist whose story about the three undiplomats was published in a French newspaper, said that she heard President Chirac (known affectionately as “Moe”) say that it was not his fault that he was late for a meeting with Queen Elizabeth at a royal banquet to mark the Centenary of the Entente Cordiale in November 2004. He said “the British did not respect protocol”.
